LEARN & REFLECT :: Straight Edge

Read and learn what STRAIGHT EDGE is about.

Straight Edge is not a religion but a philosophy, a personal choice, and a lifestyle where individuals:

- Do not drink alcohol
- Do not use any type of drugs
- Do not use caffeine or any other stimulants
- Do not hook-up or engage in casual sex with others.
- Do not participate in any form of animal use, abuse, cruelty, or exploitation.

Adopting the straight edge lifestyle put individuals in control of their own lives; it held them accountable for personal responsibility. Straight Edgers consciously follow a path that allows them to take care of themselves and their personal responsibilities without letting outside influences interfere.

  1. 1. At first there was no movement, meant a difference with punk philosophy, they thought all was lost and there was no more reason to try to improve the situation or for active people, so surrendered to alcohol and drugs. In the late '70s, the hardcore scene in Washington DC attracted many people we could only get over 21 years to protect minors. Only at concerts of all ages in which was marked with an X in the hands of children to avoid alcohol, that's why I started using the X as a symbol that defined them. During the following years appeared straight edge groups by the United States.

2.think that this lifestyle is great because it puts you in control responsibility of people and is a way that allows care for oneself. It is a group, a family can rely on extreme situations.

  2. 1-Commonly worn as a mark on the back of both hands, but can be shown in other parts of the body equally. Some fans have incorporated the symbol into clothing and pins.
The X in the back of the hands is the most famous and important symbol of Straight Edge.
According to the series of interviews conducted by journalist Michael Azerrad, the straight edge X's tour dates clustering Teen Idles down the west coast of the United States in 1980.3 Teen Idles were scheduled to play at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco , but when the band arrived, club manager discovered that all members were under 21, old enough to drink legally in the United States, for which they should refuse entry to the club. As a compromise, management marked each of the members with a black X on hand to advise personnel of the club that did not serve alcohol to musicians. Back in Washington DC, the band suggested the same system to local clubs to allow young people to attend the concerts without the need to serve alcohol and soon the brand was associated with the straight edge lifestyle.

2-straight edge militants were a familiar presence on the scene. The militant term refers to someone who is dedicated and speaks openly about his personal politics, but is assumed to be close-minded, bigoted and potentially violento.11 The militant straight edge was characterized by less tolerance for people who do not share the straight edge philosophy, more expressive about pride of being straight edge and willingness to resort to violence to promote a life limpia.11

  7. 1- The movement started in the early 1980s as a reaction against the drug and alcohol use prevalent in the punk scene, often by people who had turned to punk in the first place as a reaction against the drug and alcohol use prevalent among their Van Halen-addled high school peers and were not at all pleased to find the same self-destructive behaviors in the punk scene.

    >>Name and symbol<<
a)The name comes from the song "Straight Edge" by Minor Threat. The song decries drug use: "I'm a person just like you/ But I've got better things to do/Than sit around and fuck my head...I've got the straight edge".
The letter X became a symbol of straight edge. The origin of this was clubs which marked the hands of those who were underage with the letter X, indicating they were too young to be served alcohol. Straight edgers began showing up at clubs with the letter X already on their hands, indicating they too didn't want any alcohol. A variant on this is sXe (se for straight edge). Later, bands have used the X symbol on album covers and other paraphernalia in a variety of ways

2- I personally think that straight edge people do better in life than so many others that normally drink , smoke, use any king of drugs, or go crazy about being promiscuous. Life is really short, and each person has their own personal life style and we should respect that even though we disagree. In conclusion, I do not think that becoming one of this group will be a good idea for me because I like enjoying life at my personal perspective and you don't now what might happen tomorrow!

  8. I think thad the Straight edge is a subculture and subgenre of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs. It was a direct reaction to the sexual revolution, hedonism, and excess associated with punk rock. For some, this extends to not engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and not using caffeine or prescription drugs. The term was adopted from the song Straight Edge by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat.

Straight edge emerged amid the mid '80s hardcore punk scene, in part as a reaction against the perceived jock element of the developing scene. Since then a wide variety of beliefs and ideas have been incorporated into the movement, including vegetarianism, animal rights, communism and Hare Krishna beliefs. In many parts of the United States, straight edge is treated as a gang by law enforcement officials. A 2006 study suggested that the vast majority of people who identify as straight edge are nonviolent.

1 - Straight Edge started within the hardcore punk subculture, which his followers make a lifetime commitment to refrain from drinking alcohol, use of snuff products, drugs, and also refrain from being promiscuous. Straight Edge X symbol used to warn staff of the club that did not serve alcohol, indicating They were too young to be served alcohol.

2-Straight edge in my opinion is a good thing because it helps people not to take or use things that affect us and that affects another person's life because this is based on a life without alcohol, drugs, snuff, in the defense of a healthy life, free from vices.

  12. 1-The movement began when a group of "Punks' decided that enough was enough and they chose to abstain themselves from any drugs and alcohol. The letter X stands for them as a way to say hey i don't want any alcohol or drugs and over time it became their symbol.
2-In my personal opinion is a good thing like a great club if u ask me cause it keeps young adolescents like myself away from such harmful things such as tobacco and alcohol, its also an escape from been the normal teen who has to smoke or drink to fit in there you don't have to be what society expects from you can be better.

  16. This straight edge refers to a subculture of hardcore punk which was a direct reaction to th sexual revolution. This started in the late 1970s and early 1980s a group of kids began something that grew into a movement. This kids didn't like what was going on around them the self-detruction, the self-hatred, the pain ad suffering caused by the punk mentality. They used a symbol that was first used to identify them as being too young to drink so that bartenders would know not to give them alcoholic drinks they started to wear the X's on their hands so people would know not to offer them alcoholic. My personal opinion is that this people are not different than us they just live a better way than others do. I respect the way they want to live and I find it a healthy way to live. I might even think about living like that.

  23. Smoke free, drugs free, alcohol free - that's the best word to describe what Straight Edge is. Straight Edge or better known as 'sXe' is a subculture to represents a healthy lifestyle. There is no religious belief tied to this culture. For many straight-edge kids, however, being clean and sober was (and still is) the ultimate expression of resistance - resistance to the consumerist and self-indulgent ethos that defines mainstream U.S. culture. Straight edge is a subculture and subgenre of hardcore punk whose adherents refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational drugs. It was a direct reaction to the sexual revolution, hedonism, and excess associated with punk rock. For some, this extends to not engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and not using caffeine or prescription drugs. The term was adopted from the song "Straight Edge" by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat. A lot of people are living this lifestyle, not everybody understands it,but i think is an excellent choice to make. We don't need alcohol or drugs to have fun, we can do a lot of fun things without do that things, and that's the message that Straight Edge are trying to expanse to all the world and all the people that are leaving an unhealthy life. -The Straight Edge began in 1980's when the young people began to acquire different types of drugs and began to drink alcohol. This is a movement that have three rules: do not smoke, do not drink and do not drugs.
The Straight edge is everywhere and you can become in a member, the only thing that you may do to become in a member is to say that you are part of the club and lifetime commit.
The icon X mean the negation to the alcohol , drugs and the smoke.
-I think it's a good club and a great option for all that people that would like to change their life. It's a good point because this point out taht the people doesn't have to do all those things to have fun, because there's other ways to have fun without drink alcohol , do drugs or to smoke.
